Dr Awni Etaywe is a lecturer in sociolinguistics and a forensic linguistics researcher in terrorism, cybercrimes and digital deviance. He uses his innovative toolkit and disruptive research to offer new insights of real impact into criminal investigations. He examines the patterning and functions of language use in digital forensic texts and transcribed speech (e.g. threatening communications, and incitement to hatred, discrimination and violence). His analysis of illegal online content (i) helps investigators establish evidence of crimes and their moral and social motives, (ii) enables a deeper understanding of the criminal nature of the language used and how social (dis)affiliations, threats and incitement are enacted, and (iii) maximises intelligence yield. Etaywe's interdisciplinary research at the intersection of language, law, security and intelligence uses social semiotic techniques, and discourse and corpus analytic methods. His insightful research appears in Routledge’s textbooks on online deviance and in top journals e.g. Language in Society.
