Yumiko Ohara is an associate professor in the College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo which houses the only doctoral program in the United States focusing on revitalizing Indigenous languages. She has been involved in revitalization work on Ainu, Ryūkyūan, and the Hawaiian language since 2008. Her recent publications include a co-edited book with Patrick Heinrich (2019) Routledge Handbook of Japanese Sociolinguistics from Routledge, a co-authored book chapter with Yuki Okada (2022) “Creation and expansion of a safe place to be Ainu: The Urespa project”, and a journal co-authored article with Seira Machida (2023) “Uchinaaguchi learning through Indigenous critical pedagogy: Why do some people in Yomitan not know Yomitan mountain?”.
