I am a DPhil Candidate at the University of Oxford. My research is at the crossroad of Sociolinguistics and Dialectology. My doctorate research investigates the ideology of the Kansai dialects which have gained popularity throughout Japan. I am particularly interested in the debate over language ownership and the issue of a lack of authenticity as the Kansai dialects are increasingly commodified in certain industries. I am also broadly interested in Sociolinguistic matters in Eastern Asian languages, especially related to regional and social variation.
I was affiliated with the University of Osaka during my 2022 fieldwork during which I published an article in Japanese on the use of dialects in covid policy promotion in Japan. I hold a master’s degree from Oxford in Japanese Studies and have studied the Japanese language for undergraduate study at Beijing Language and Culture University.
