Discussing sexual modernity as an ethnic minority on a talk show: A multimodal discourse analysis case study (20109)
The paper aims to investigate the intersectionality of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and globalization among the ethnic minority in a multinational state such as the Russian Federation. The Sakha people are the titular nation of the Republic of Sakha and the majority in that region; however, they are also one of the numerous indigenous ethnicities in Russia and, therefore, a minority. The women of Sakha find themselves in a complex situation where they are expected to uphold their cultural identity amidst the influence of globalization and the growing impact of social media. However, the examination of gender and sexuality within Russia so far has primarily centered around the Slavic Russian majority while neglecting ethnic minorities.
In a study conducted by Semenova (2023), the representations of "lost" girls and ideal "our" girls in a talk show were analyzed, exposing the existing assumption that Sakha women are responsible for preserving their nation.
This study continues the examination of the intersectionality of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and globalization in the context of ethnic minorities living in Russia, as discussed by the participants in a local talk show. Multimodal discourse analysis is used to examine not only spoken language but also visual data (Kress, 2012; Bouvier & Rasmussen, 2022).
The study's findings offer insights into how the Sakha youth discusses and shapes contemporary understandings of gender and sexuality through talking about feminism. The findings in this study shed light on the attitudes and critiques of feminism among young individuals in the Sakha community. These insights can inform efforts to adapt feminist initiatives in a way that takes into account the specific challenges faced by the Sakha society. Moreover, it contributes to a wider conversation on how ethnic minority groups navigate issues related to cultural identity, gender roles, and sexual agency in today's globalized world.
